Ok so it may not be the Hungry Jack triple stack drenched in Aunt Jamima syrup, but that is not to say it isn’t delicious! If you are beginning to pick up the English lingo you will quickly realize that an American pancake and an English pancake are two very different things! I even made the mistake of buying pancake mix in the grocery store thinking I could manipulate the batter into the kind of pancakes I’ve devoured since childhood. Not a great success!
English pancakes are more like crepes than fluffy buttermilks, but I think I found a compromise! My Old Dutch restaurant serves up some very satisfying “pancake meals.”

English pancake with pears, chocolate sauce and ice cream

With four locations throughout London, you are bound to stumble upon this English pancake house that separates its menu into the “sweet” and the “savory” pancakes. Savory pancakes include my personal favorite the “greek,” basically a Greek salad on a pancake. If you want a more breakfast pancake they offer up the “amsterdammer” which is a mix of sautéed apple & smoked bacon with maple syrup. If you’re more of a sweet tooth, they have a wide arrange of pancakes that will satisfy. I personally like to take advantage of the “make your own,” where you can pick a fruit, a sauce or ice cream and any other extras. However the sweet pancakes the restaurant thought up are also worth trying.
I would make a trip to My Old Dutch on Monday mornings, where all the pancakes are only £5! Don’t be tempted to get two though, for it is virtually impossible to consume more than one of these English treats. The portion is overwhelming and leaves virtually no free space on the plate. So I say instead of knocking the difference between American and English pancakes, EMBRACE IT and head over to My Old Dutch! Happy Eating!
